Yin yoga, which is the first level of taoist yoga, is so named because of its correspondence to the Taoist concept of yin.

The practice is called yin, as opposed to yang, because it corresponds with yin attributes such as substance (as opposed to activity), passive posturing (as opposed to active movement), cold (as opposed to hot) and other such qualities. Yin yoga targets connective tissue, specifically ligaments and tendons in the joints and spine. Over time, practice of yin yoga can lengthen these tissues, increasing range of motion. That's how we get flexible!

To give an idea of the role that connective tissue plays in determining range of motion: muscles account for about forty percent of the resistance against the body's flexibility, while connective tissue accounts for about fifty percent.

Yin yoga is ideal for recovering athletes, your dodgy knees, tired souls and other bodies that just don't feel the way they once used to.

It emphasizes releasing muscles and Yang- ashtanga or vinyasa- on contracting them.

Yin Yoga, which consists of passive postures held for lengthy amount of time, is an essential complement to the more active, Yang, styles of yoga like ashtanga or vinyasa.

So, when Yin yoga is added to your flow, it becomes a restorative practice, ideal for recovering athletes, dodgy knees, tired souls and other bodies that just don’t feel the way they once used to.

                                                                  Give it a go!
