Yoga can be a pure physical exercise that will make you feel good and sweat, but for those who wish, there is a lot more to discover.
Most people who start with yoga will feel that there are several dimensions to it. Traditionally yoga represents a philosophy with focus on training mental strength and spirituality.

You meet yourself on the yoga mat. Just as you are in life you can be impatient, stressed, tired, get frustrated over a movement or push yourselves too hard. After a time, all types of behavior become evident and those who want can learn from it and work with it, both physically and mentally. The physically demanding form which challenges the body - while you have to stay focused on what you do - gives you mental training, which requires the presence of here and now. It is also something you can take with you in your everyday life.

Physically, you notice pretty quickly that yoga makes your body strong, flexible and more balanced. You may also feel a little bit longer and attain better posture. There are movements of all parts of the body, both muscles and organs. The idea is to cleanse and release toxins, as you sweat out. The training also increases the blood circulation and oxygen levels in the blood. The immune system and the overall health will therefore be improved.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga - often named only Ashtanga Yoga - is a dynamic and physical strong form of yoga. The founder of the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois. Pattabhi Jois himself was a disciple of Krischnamacharaya, known as the father of Hatha yoga. Jois was only twelve when he met his guru and in secret from the family started to practice yoga. The foundation of Ashtanga yoga is said to have been in a text, Yoga Korunta, that Krishnamacharaya had learnt from his teacher in Tibet.

Ashtanga means eight in sanscrit. The name refers to one of the basic texts of yoga, Patanjali's Yoga Sutra, which contains both a practical and a more philosophical explanation of what yoga is. Simply put, the goal of yoga is said to be a state, a kind of conscious and peaceful presence, where you have quieted the consciousness. In Sanskrit this is called the ultimate goal, Samadhi.

To reach Samadhi there is a eightfold path or eigth limbs of which the physical training is one of them. The other limbs contains more philosophical aspects how you are to your self and others, breathing, to be able to focus inwards and meditation. Pattabhi Jois idea is to first start practicing asanas - the yoga movements - and later go towards the other parts. His belief was that we need to start with a strong and healthy body.
